Kumasi Asante Kotoko have condemned the attitude of their fans during the Confederations Cup group match against Etoile du Sahel, but say they are not aware of any fans manhandling referee Coffie Codjia.
The Benin referee endured a torrid time in the tunnel and on his way out of the stadium at the hands of angry Kotoko , but Kotoko say their knowledge of the incidents stem only from media reports.
“What I know was that there were media reports that the referee was assaulted,” Baah Nuako said.
“We are still waiting for the report of the match officials. But the mood outside the stadium was tense and I got a message from friends insisting management members and I should stay inside until things had calmed down so I would not have been in a position to see what happened to the match officials.”
The Kotoko officials witnessed the hurling of plastic water bottles and sachets one of which struck an Etoile player.
“I saw the incidents during the game and would expect the match commissioner to mention them in his report to the Confederation of African Football.
“I expect the match commissioner to say something about the referee and say something about the behaviour of the Tunisian players.
“I expect him to comment on the throwing on sachets water unto the pitch by the fans. I thought it was uncalled for. Yes they were disgruntled by the referee and the players but it was not a good thing. I thought the supporters would have comported themselves better,” the official added.
“But it was Coffie Codjia who irked the Kotoko officials most. We are appalled by the performance of the referee and are considering a protest but I don’t think it will make any difference.”
Baah Nuako does not also think their final group game against El Merreikh in Sudan will make a difference despite the Porcupine Warriors being just two points off the pace in Group B.
“There is no way El Merreikh or Kotoko can qualify for the final. We will be playing for pride. I think the competition will be between JSK and Etoile,” he said.
