Kumasi Asante Kotoko coach Bashir Hayford has told his players it is imperative to win Sunday’s Confederations Cup game against El-Merreikh if they are to keep alive their dreams of progressing to the next stage of the competition.

The Porcupine Warriors are playing catch up early in the group after losing their opening game against Etoile du Sahel in Sousse but Hayford reckons a good result against the Sudanese will put them straight back into contention.

“It is our second game in the group and after losing the first one, it is prudent we win Sunday’s match so as to boost our confidence and as well put us in a better position in the league,” he said.

Hayford was heavily criticized for his team’s midweek loss to Liberty Professionals in the off season Top 4 competition but insist the Confederations Cup match will be a completely different ball game.

Kotoko have a brilliant record at home in continental competition and will be supremely confident ahead of this one but the Sudanese have promised to make it a louder argument than the Porcupine Warriors expect.

Michael Krugger, their German trainer knows the Baba Yara Stadium well after visiting with Arab Contractors in 1996 and is aware what to expect.

“I know the crowd will be passionate and that they will be important for Kotoko but we are here to get at least a point because we don’t fear the home side,” he said.

Kotoko’s miserable away record means home games like this one are fundamentally crucial.

“We hope to improve tremendously on Sunday since that is the only option available to us,” Hayford said.
