Asante Kotoko coach Bashir Hayford has defended his selection policy after the Porcupine Warriors lost 2-1 to Liberty Professionals in their Top 4 meeting at the Ohene Djan Stadium on Wednesday.

Yaw Antwi scored twice for Liberty against a Kotoko side without some key players as Hayford kept one eye on the weekend’s Confederations Cup game in Kumasi against El-Merreikh.

The win gave Liberty the early initiative in the off-season competition with six maximum points out of two games but for Kotoko coach it was another loss that brought unwanted scrutiny of his selection and tactics.

Hayford only introduced the likes of Samuel Inkoom, Jordan Opoku and Eric Bekoe in the second half as the Porcupine Warriors chased the game but insists he did it for the good of the team.

“If you want to be sure of a player, you have to use them first and that is all I did with those who have not been regulars for us in the Liberty game,” he said.

“The other players need playing time too and games like this offers the best opportunity to do that.”

Hayford is likely to revert to many of the established names for Sunday’s Confederations Cup meeting and says the Liberty has given him a good idea who is up for it and who is not.

“We need a competent team with a solid bench and this one has given me a fair idea who to play on Sunday so the fans should take it cool.”
