Accra Hearts of Oak have defended their decision to sack some of the biggest names in the club as part of efforts by Kosta Papic to trim down the squad.

The Serbian wants a team of around 27 players and has wielded the axe by telling eight players they are surplus to requirement.

The players including Sannie Mohammed and Francis Bossman who were key in their 2004 Confederations Cup win have been told to find clubs and negotiate their release for those with years still to run on their contracts.

The decision has infuriated Sannie Mohammed, the club’s ex-goalkeeper who issued a damning verdict on player welfare in the club suggesting playing for Hearts was all about name and no financial security.

Now Hearts officials are worried their ex-goalkeeper’s words could harm their recruitment drive and paint the club in a bad light and are keen in their words to “set the records straight.”

Communications Manager, Albert Commey told KickOffGhana.com the decision on which players had to be released was made by Papic after two weeks training with the side and insist it was based purely on the supreme interest of Hearts more than anything else.

“Kosta Papic decided after training with them for two weeks to trim the squad so Sannie should not position himself as a scapegoat and the victim of a management vendetta,” Commey said.

“When Eyal Lachman presented a list of players he wanted to work with after a few weeks at Hearts, Sannie was not part of them so that says a lot.

“Every time there is change there are casualties. The truth of the matter is that Hearts performed poorly in the last season.

“Hearts wants do well next season and to do well we must take a critical look at the playing body, organization of the club, the attitude of the players, their character commitment level and performance from last seasons and act.

“Sometimes when you have players who have been with a club for so long, it affects their hunger and we are hoping the changes will make a difference.

“Barcelona off-loaded Ronaldinho but it was not because he was a bad player. They just wanted a new direction. It is a similar thing happening at Hearts.”
