Bashir Hayford will return to the bench for Kumasi Asante Kotoko after more than six weeks out following the death of his wife.
The Kotoko coach was granted compassionate leave but will be back on the bench for their opening Confederations Cup group game against Etoile du Sahel in Sousse on Sunday.
“I wanted to see through the job I started in the league but things happen that you have no control over,” he told KickOffGhana.com.
“I am just glad the club stood by me in those difficult times and now I am just delighted to be back on the bench.”
Hayford has been actively involved in the training sessions in the build up to the game but says he will rely heavily on his assistant Johnson Smith who took charge of the club’s last two games in Africa.
“Smith has known the team better in the last weeks so he will have a big say in Sunday’s game,” he said.
Hayford reckons the game itself will be difficult. “We have a very good record at home but it is not so good away from home. North African teams are difficult to play against anywhere but with a passionate crowd behind them, they are even more difficult to beat,” he said.
“But we have played some really good football and have momentum on the back of a really good season so if we get it clear in our minds, we should able to get something out of this,” he said.
Emmanuel Osei Kufour is suspended for the Porcupine Warriors but Kotoko have been reinforced by the addition of Kwadwo Poku upfront and should be more solid at the back after they signed Hannan Giwah from RTU and Michael Ofosu from Heart of Lions.
In the build up to the game, the Kotoko management have increased the winning bonus for the players from 300 dollars per game to 500 dollars in the hope that it will bring a first win on the road in over two years.
