Liberty Professionals will not play in the upcoming African Confederations Cup after club owner Sly Tetteh decided the competition can ruin their finances.

Liberty coach Jones Attuquayefio had advanced strong reasons why the Dansoman based club had to play in CAF’s second tier competition but Tetteh insist the club has many projects to undertake that takes priority over a competition whose financial returns rarely enables clubs recoup even the cost of travelling.

Tetteh says his priority now is to get the club’s own stadium in Dansoman to an appreciable level and upgrade its hostel and gym facilities rather than run around the continent with no guarantee of reaching the league stage of the competition where there is a chance of reaping financial rewards.

“We are thinking it will be in the interest of the club to finish with our hostel project first and then two look at our pitch-we are thinking of astro-turf before playing in Africa," President Sly Tetteh said.

"Our decision not to play is not financial-yes financial is there but you also have to look at the priorities but looking at our resources, it will not be possible." he added.

Liberty’s decision not to take the risk of playing in the Confederations Cup could be followed by Berekum Arsenals who have asked for government assistance before committing to the competition.

That is unlikely to happen and could leave Ghana with no representative in the Confederations Cup next year.
