Birmingham's Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Kingson has hit back at club co-owner David Sullivan and insisted: “I've been treated like an animal.”
Sullivan singled out summer signings, like reserve goalkeeper Kingson as “a load of rubbish” and says they are the reason why his club was relegated.
But the 29-year-old Ghanaian, named an All-Star at the 2008 African Nations Cup, stormed: “I’m sad over the wholly unjustified and unfair comments about me when my track record points to the contrary.
“Even an animal does not deserve to be described as ‘a load of rubbish’ and ‘waste of space’.”
Sullivan directed his tirade at the Black Stars shot stopper even though the Ghanaian played in just three matches this season.
Kingson gained rave reviews in the UK newspapers for his debut against Hereford and excelled in the match with Blackburn in the Carling Cup competition.
He was carried off in the game against Blackburn after suffering from concussion after clashing with an opponent, but a howler in the game against Portsmouth limited his playing opportunities.
“How can he make such an assessment of my performance when I played in just three games throughout the season and when I have not even met him,” Kingson said.
“I would urge Sullivan to go back and watch our Carling Cup matches against Hereford and Blackburn and see why I got rave reviews in the newspapers across the country.
“Even in the game against Portsmouth when I made mistake and as human being we sometimes make mistakes. If he looks at the entire game, he may realise that he made the wrong assessment of me.
“What makes this even painful is that I nearly lost my life in September trying to protect the honour of this club because I believe in the Birmingham and the fans. To get this insult in return for my commitment to the club is a slap in the face.”
His exclusion from the Birmingham first team has surprised many followers of international football because of his performances for the Black Stars at the 2006 World Cup and the recent Africa Cup of Nations.
“These descriptions by Sullivan are by far in contrast with my performance at the last World Cup against countries like Italy, Czech Republic, USA and Brazil and was named the third best goalkeeper,” said Kingson who joined Birmingham on a free transfer.
“At the recent African Cup of Nations even when my team didn’t reach the final, I was named the second best keeper among many world class goalkeepers.
“As an elderly person he should be making statements worthy of emulation by the young ones. If he had such reservations about me, I think he should have met me face-to-face to make these comments and I would have had the appropriate response for him.”
