Dede Ayew will lead the national U-20 side out for the first time on Sunday as they seek to end Ghana’s hoodoo at the African Youth Championships.
The France based player has missed the side’s three previous games but has been in camp with the team this week ahead of the crucial qualifier against the Gambians on Sunday.
“I have always said I want to play a part in the U-20s so naturally I am delighted this time I can play a par in the game.
"The youth championship is very crucial for all of us so we are going to Banjul determined to go through,” he told KickOffGhana.com.
Ghana has not played at the Africa event which also serves as qualifiers for the World Youth Cup since appearing in the 2003 edition but it is not just Dede who is itching to appear on that stage again.
Sellas Tetteh who made an unsuccessful pitch for the Black Stars job after taking temporary charge of the team in June will effectively be on examination in the qualifier.
He was the man in charge when Ghana failed to qualify for the first time for the World U-17 championships in 2001 and is desperate to avoid another failure.
“I am confident we will go through because the players need it and I do too. I feel that if we don’t do well it lead to questions I don’t need about my credentials as a coach.”
