Former Black Stars coach Osam Doudu says the Ghana Football Association must look within Ghana for a successor to Claude Le Roy.

Osam who guided the Black Stars to their last Nations Cup triumph in 1982 says everything points to fact that local coaches will work for Ghana at a less expense.

“If you look at Ghana and the history of the Nations Cup, the locals have always done well so I think rather than run around trying to employ a foreign coach, the FA should look within Ghana for a replacement,” Osam said.

Osam, one of the most successful Ghanaian coaches feels the GFA risk damaging the long term future of Ghanaian coaches by constantly looking outside for a national team boss.

“We are not building the capacity of the local coaches and not developing them well enough which might work against us in the future.”

The pro-local coaches’ advocates have found their voices again after Claude LeRoy’s decision not to extend his stay. They point to the fact that all four of the countries past wins in the Nations Cup came under locals and insist a Ghanaian deserves the job.

It was part of the reason why Marcel Desailly, born to Ghanaian parents was the overwhelming favourite to succeed LeRoy. Desailly has turned down the chance but Osam suggested it would have been a mistake handing the reins to him.

“It is not about who has played football up to the highest level. Coaching is about achievement and what you have done,” he said.

“The GFA should look for someone who has achieved and understands the African terrain.”
