Big prizes and few surprises await schoolchildren who participate in next month’s African Unity Milo Marathon race in Accra, as the top finishers in the 15km mini-marathon would benefit from the biggest cash award ever given out at the event.

As the estimated 2,000 participants undergo registration at the Dansoman 4 JSS premises and the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex at North Kaneshie, their focus will be on the $500 school bursary and assorted Milo products, sponsored by Nestle Ghana Limited for winners of the boys and girls competitions.

Other undisclosed cash rewards, sponsored by the State Insurance Company (SIC), await the top finishers of the competition reserved for schoolchildren aged 15 and below.

Unlike the hugely popular Accra Milo Marathon that takes place on the last Saturday of September each year, the 2007 competition takes place on a Sunday on an unfamiliar route.

The race will now start at the El Wak Stadium at Cantonments instead of the Azumah Nelson Complex as has been the case in previous years, and will end at the Independence Square.

The Dansoman Keep Fit Club grounds, which had been the traditional finishing point now becomes the starting point for the 42.2km adults race.

This year’s event will be run on the theme, “Run for African Unity” to give emphasis to the integration of the African continent and it takes place at a time that African Heads of State will be gathered in Accra for the African Union (AU) Summit.

It is for this reason that the event will take place to coincide with Ghana’s 47th Republic Anniversary and also forms part of Ghana’s 50th Independence Anniversary (Ghana@50) celebrations.

Apart from the attractive prizes at stake, winners of the boys’ and girls’ events will be honoured in the presence of AU Chairman, President John Agyekum Kufuor and other visiting African Heads of State, at a colourful ceremony at the Independence Square.
