Handball course ends In Winneba

HANDBALL ASSOCIATION of Ghana, in conjunction with the handball club of the University of Education, last week organized a week’s coaching course at the Winneba Sports College.

According to Mr. Saka Acquaye, Secretary General of the Handball Association, in all, 107 University students, coaches from various regions, security services and sports masters from schools and colleges took part in the course that saw them go through some useful exercises to enhance their performance and knowledge about the game.

He revealed that most of the participants in the course had qualified for the Olympic Solidarity Course in September this year.

Some dignitaries who grace the occasion included Mr. Beresford Anani, Sports Director for Central Region, Mr. J.C. Amui, a lecturer at the university, Mr. Charles Mensah, chief referee and George Bankole, national handball coach.

In his closing address, Mr. James Owusu-Baah of the Sports College who represented the National Sports Council (NSC) Chief Executive, thanked the organizers for a good work done, and charged the participants to put what they have learnt into good use.

Mr. Saka Acquaye, Secretary General of the Association, who represented the Association Chairman, emphasized the need for Ghana to build a Sports Hall just like in Togo, Cote d’Ivoire and Benin Republic.

He observed that these countries had facilities of hosting indoor games because of the sports halls which they built, separately from their stadia.

He was of the view that Ghana would excel when the infrastructure was put in place for use by our athletes.

Mrs Naaki Amui, chairperson for the occasion, in her closing remarks, congratulated the participants for their good behaviour during the one- week course and wished them good luck in their endeavours.

In a relative development, the Greater Accra Handball teams, veterans version, that took part in a two-day Lome tournament, which included Nigeria, Benin, hosts Togo, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana, failed to glitter, but all the same, the championship was declared null and avoid.

Information reaching DAILY GUIDE SPORTS indicated that the men lost to Benin and Togo while the women won all their two games.

However, due to circumstances beyond their control, the competition was declared non competitive because of the mixture of the countries, while Nigeria was asked to host the next edition of the Handball National veterans team in October this year.
